What is a copy audit… and is it worth it?

If you run a business, you already know your words matter. Your words are the bridge between you and your customers.

They live on your homepage. On your product shelves. In your emails. On the little chalkboard sign outside. Words are everywhere in your brand.

They carry your brand across a thousand tiny moments.

But over time, those words can get… tired.. and misaligned.

The words that surround your brand are either building trust, or breaking it. There is no neutral. Every line is doing something, or not.

That’s where a copy audit comes in.

It’s not a rewrite just yet, nor a branding overhaul.

It’s a business review, through the lens of language.

What is a copy audit?

A copy audit is a strategic, outsider’s eye on how your business is communicating, and whether your words are working.

Not just if you have copy, but:

  • Is it clear?

  • Is it compelling?

  • Is it consistent across platforms?

  • Is it doing its job, converting, connecting, differentiating?

A great audit does two things:

  • Diagnoses: where your messaging is falling flat, confusing, or missing opportunities

  • Prescribes: clear, practical recommendations to strengthen it, without demanding a total rewrite

Think of it like a copy-focused business consultant with an eye for persuasion, taste, and customer psychology. No fluff. No guessing. Just informed insight.

What’s actually delivered?

I’ll typically deliver a 1–3 page summary document that outlines what I saw, what’s working, what’s costing you, and the highest-impact changes to make next. Depending on your business, a full copy audit can cover any of the following:

Website Copy

  • Homepage hierarchy: Is it clear what you do and why it matters?

  • Navigation and flow: Are visitors being guided to take action?

  • Calls to action: Are they compelling, or invisible?

  • Messaging consistency: Does it sound like one cohesive voice, or a team of confused interns?

  • Search-friendliness: Are you using the language your customers are searching for?

Product/Service Pages

  • Features vs. benefits: Are you describing your offer or selling its impact?

  • Structure: Is the layout helping or hurting conversion?

  • Emotional appeal: Does it speak to what your customer really wants?

  • Pricing language: Are you just listing costs, or framing value?

Email Marketing & Flows

  • Welcome sequences: Are they setting the tone or sending people running?

  • Promotions: Are your subject lines getting clicks? Are your offers being opened?

  • Abandoned cart emails: Are you just reminding, or persuading?

  • Tone and timing: Is it too much, too little, or just off?

Social Media Captions

  • Brand voice: Does it actually sound like you?

  • Scroll-stopping hooks: Are you capturing attention or blending in?

  • CTAs: Are you inviting action or just posting to post?

In-Store or Offline Copy (for brick-and-mortar businesses)

  • Signage: Is it adding personality—or confusing people?

  • Menus, labels, packaging: Are they intuitive, on-brand, and consistent?

  • Printed materials: Are brochures, flyers, or handouts clear and compelling?

Blog & Content Marketing

  • Are the headlines working hard enough?

  • Are the topics strategic or random?

  • Are you positioning yourself as an expert, or an echo?

  • Is your content structured in a way that encourages reading and action?

… and what if I don’t already have any of that?!”

Fear not! A good audit is built to find those gaps.

If a channel is missing, I evaluate:

  • Business fit: Would this medium move the metrics you care about?

  • Audience appetite: Are your buyers there and ready to engage?

  • Effort-to-impact ratio: How quickly could a basic version pay for itself?

Then I outline a priority build list, the minimum-viable assets that will give you the biggest lift fast. No pressure, it’s up to you if you need my help implementing them.

You’ll see why each piece matters, what to say, and when to send—so you can DIY or delegate.

Who Needs a Copy Audit?

Most businesses do, so matter how small. But here’s when it really helps:

  • You’ve never had a copywriter look at your stuff, and you’re curious what could be improved.

  • You’ve changed your offerings, target audience, or brand vibe, but your words haven’t caught up.

  • You’re doing everything right… but still not getting clicks, calls, or conversions.

  • You don’t have the budget for a full rebrand yet, but you know something’s off.

  • You want to grow but feel like your brand voice isn’t strong (or memorable) enough.

And if you're the type who says, “I just want someone to tell me what to fix,” then this is made for you.

What you’ll walk away with

I’ll give you:

  • Tactical tips to improve how you communicate

  • Ideas for how to use copy better (without rewriting everything)

  • Honest, constructive feedback, not just compliments in disguise

  • A clear sense of what’s missing, messy, or just meh

  • And if you want help beyond the audit? That’s optional. No pressure.

I’m temporarily offering copy audits for free. Not because it’s worthless, but because it’s worth starting the conversation.

Want one?

Lets talk!

If you’re in Sydney, I can pop by your shop, café, studio, or office, coffee in one hand, red pen in the other.

You’ll get clarity, recommendations, and a roadmap. No pressure. No strings. Just sharper words.
